It's a Fair Day, Amber Brown by written by Paula Danziger and illustrated by Tony Ross (Putnam, 2002) is a delightful episode in the A Is for Amber series for beginning readers. Amber, on vacation in the Poconos with her parents, her best friend, Justin, and his family, is ready for a perfect day at the county fair. The day is full of promise, but becomes just a fair day after Amber's parents argue and an upset Amber gets lost while at the fair. Dana Lubotsky provides an energetic narration at a pace appropriate for beginning readers. She brings Amber to life and, by changing her voice throughout the story, gives the other characters distinct personalities. One side of the tape has page-turn signals, while on the other side the story is told uninterrupted. Sound effects used throughout complement the story. Youngsters will embrace Amber's sense of humor and will be drawn to her playful relationship with Justin. Her emotional reaction to the arguments between her parents will also strike a chord with children who experience similar circumstances in their own lives.
