It's the summer before fourth grade and Lucy Rose has a lot going on in her life. Her parents are divorcing, her grandparents have a severe apricot/squirrel problem, her lanyard chain is harder to make than she'd supposed, and there's an obnoxious girl causing her trouble. Add that to Bingo at the senior center, moustaches, a friend's desire for a camp out, anticipating a birthday surprise, and searching for palindromes, and you have a busy summer. Katy Kelly's sequel (Delacorte, 2005) to Lucy Rose: Here's the Thing About Me (Delacorte, 2004; Listening Library 2004) is written in the first person as journal entries. Tara Sands captures Lucy's young girl's voice and creates a different personality for each of the other characters by using different voices. The book's language is rich and the characters are likeable. Young listeners will be concerned with Lucy Rose's problems and rejoice in her successes, while enjoying the way she uses language.
